Guwahati: Following the BJP-NDA's resounding victory in Assam for the third consecutive time, Himanta Biswa Sarma made a bold claim. While talking to the media, drawing a parallel to Aditya Dhar's recent blockbuster Bollywood film 'Dhurandhar', he took a jibe at the Congress party. Himanta stated, "We have our own 'Dhurandhars' (stalwarts/operatives) within the Congress." He claimed that there were 30 Congress candidates who shared good relations with both the BJP and himself personally. Of these, six candidates have successfully won their seats and entered the Legislative Assembly.
When asked about his earlier assertion—that he would personally ensure 30 Congress tickets were allotted—Himanta Biswa Sarma was asked: "How many of *your* candidates were actually given tickets by the opposition party this time?" Responding to this query, Himanta said, "The Congress gave tickets to 30 leaders who share good relations with us; six of them won. It is the senior leaders of the Congress themselves who assist us—and they do so openly. We have to operate even within the enemy camp."
Citing an example, he further added, "Just as you saw in the movie 'Dhurandhar' - how operatives functioned within Pakistan - we, too, have our own 'Dhurandhars' embedded within the Congress." When asked if these individuals were, in fact, Himanta's spies within the Congress, he replied, "They are not spies. They have their own political careers to consider. They would not win if they were to join the BJP outright. Therefore, they must remain within the Congress to serve the nation while continuing to extend their support to the BJP."
Of the 19 Congress candidates who emerged victorious in Assam, 18 are Muslims. Only one Hindu candidate from the Congress—Jay Prakash Das—secured a victory, winning the Naoboicha seat in the Lakhimpur district. Commenting on this, Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted that, in Assam, the Congress has effectively become the party of the "Miya Muslims." He stated that the Hindu population in Assam neither votes for the Congress nor has any inclination to do so. Himanta went even further, claiming that six Congress MLAs would cast their votes in favor of the BJP's candidate during the upcoming Presidential election.
In the elections held for Assam's 126-member Legislative Assembly, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) achieved success, securing a total of 102 seats. Of these, the BJP won 82 seats. It contested a total of 90 seats; thus, the party's strike rate stood at approximately 92%. The BJP's allies—the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People's Front—each won 10 seats. The BJP has been in power in Assam since 2016, and this time, it has achieved a hat-trick of victories.
