Kolkata: Following a shift in the political landscape of West Bengal, Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee has suffered a major setback. Security arrangements outside the residence of Mamata Banerjee's nephew have been scaled down. Typically, a heavy police force was stationed outside his home; however, security has been reduced following the declaration of the Assembly election results. Residents of the area have expressed their delight at this development. Locals state that they can now traverse that route with ease.
Speaking to ANI, local resident Sourav Banerjee provided details regarding the reduced security presence outside Abhishek Banerjee's home. He noted that prior to May 4, a substantial contingent of the Bengal Police force was deployed outside the TMC MP's residence. That presence has now diminished, and security personnel are gradually being withdrawn from the site.
He remarked, "This is Abhishek Banerjee's house. He has built such a massive residence here. Previously, between 300 and 350 police personnel used to be deployed here for a single MP. Now, observe the situation; the atmosphere is calm. People can walk freely on the streets. We used to face difficulties in the past."
Continuing his remarks, Sourav added, "Abhishek Banerjee's house is located here, yet he has done nothing for us. He used to intimidate us, but now people are living in peace. We are currently in a very good situation. The change that has taken place is excellent."
A video has also surfaced showing the diminishing security presence outside Abhishek Banerjee's home, in which security equipment is seen being removed from his residence, 'Shanti Niketan'.
Earlier in the day, the Election Commission issued strict directives to all officials to prevent post-poll violence following the Assembly elections. This order from the Commission came in the wake of the vandalization of a Trinamool Congress office in Asansol.
According to the TMC, unidentified assailants ransacked the office. The office premises sustained significant damage as a result of this attack. The TMC has openly leveled this accusation against the BJP.
It is worth noting that, by dismantling Mamata Banerjee's 15-year rule, the Bharatiya Janata Party has registered a historic victory in West Bengal. In the West Bengal Legislative Assembly—which comprises 294 seats—the BJP has secured 207 seats (with the election for one seat still pending). Mamata Banerjee has not only lost the crown of Bengal but also failed to retain her own seat; following Nandigram, Suvendu Adhikari has now defeated her in Bhabanipur as well.
