Diwali 2025 Story: Every year, the festival of Diwali is celebrated on the new moon day of the month of Kartik. This year, Diwali will be celebrated on October 20th. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshipped. It is believed that worshipping Goddess Lakshmi with proper rituals on this day pleases her and bestows a happy life throughout the year. With Goddess Lakshmi's blessings, financial difficulties are not a concern for the entire household.

The doors of people's homes remain open at night on Diwali. There's a legend behind why people keep their doors open on Diwali night. Let's learn about that legend.

That's why doors are kept open on Diwali night

People keep their doors open on Diwali night because it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi enters homes on this day. She resides in homes where there is light, cleanliness, and devotion, so doors are left open to welcome her and let her in. It is also believed that gods and goddesses do not visit dark homes, so they are welcomed with light and open doors.

Lakshmi’s Visit On Diwali Night

According to a legend, Goddess Lakshmi once went on a pilgrimage on the new moon night of Kartik month. Darkness enveloped the world, and she lost her way. She decided to spend the night in the mortal world and return to Vaikuntha in the morning. However, she found every door locked. One door remained open.

Lakshmi’s Blessing Transforms Humble Home

A lamp was burning at the entrance. Goddess Lakshmi went towards the light. She saw an elderly woman working there. She told her she needed a place to stay for the night. The elderly woman offered her shelter and a bed. She then set to work. While working, she fell asleep. When she woke up in the morning, she found the guests gone, but her home had been transformed into a palace.

Open doors invite Lakshmi’s grace and prosperity

Diamonds, jewelry, and wealth were strewn all around. Then, the elderly woman realized that the guest who had visited her home that night was none other than Goddess Lakshmi herself. Since then, the tradition of lighting lamps and keeping the house open on the new moon night of Kartik month began. On this night, people open their doors and wait for Goddess Lakshmi to arrive.
