New Delhi: Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated this time on 14 September. The idol of Ganpati Bappa has reached many homes a day before. In such a situation, the time between the beginning of Chaturthi Tithi in the morning and the Sthapana Muhurta in the afternoon is raising questions for the devotees. According to the Panchang, Chaturthi Tithi will start on September 14 at 7:06 am. The Madhyamni Muhurta of Ganpati Sthapana and Puja in New Delhi is from 11:02 am to 1:31 pm. This means that even after coming to Bappa's house, one will have to wait for the auspicious time for formal installation.
Bringing the idol of Ganapati home and its formal installation (Ganesh Sthapana) are two different processes. Many families bring the idol home a day before as per convenience or their tradition. This is considered the arrival of Ganpati. The idol can be kept clean and respectfully at a high place. According to tradition, it is considered appropriate to perform the main puja, resolution and invocation at an auspicious time.
After bathing in the morning, clean the place of worship. Spread a red or yellow colored cloth on the platform and keep all the puja materials ready in advance. By collecting things like flowers, Durva, Akshat, Roli, Mauli, Janeu, Kalash, betel-nut and Naivedya in advance, there will be no problem at the time of establishment.
During this time the family can remember the name of Ganapati. Chanting ‘Om Gan Ganpataye Namah’ or reciting Ganesh Stotra can also be done. This is a time of preparation and reverence, it should not be considered the main Sthapana puja.
Generally, there is no objection in lighting a lamp at the place of worship at home as a sign of reverence, but it is important to keep it in a safe place. Especially if the idol is covered with cloth, then lamp or incense should not be kept very close to it. Statues, flowers or decorative items may be damaged by fire. Whether to keep the idol covered or not also depends on the family tradition. Some families offer darshan of Bappa at the time of arrival, while some people remove the cover at the time of installation.
Modak, laddu or other prasad can be prepared in advance. However, it is considered better to offer the main Naivedya during Sthapana and Puja. Similarly, formal aarti is also performed after the establishment. If there is a tradition in the family of performing a small welcome aarti at the time of Ganpati's arrival, then it can be followed.
Caution is necessary here. If the idol of Ganapati is made of clay or natural colours, then pouring water, milk or Panchamrit directly on it can spoil the idol. Therefore, even if there is a tradition of consecration, the nature of the idol should be kept in mind. The method of worship may differ according to the family and region, so it would be better to take advice from your priest.
This time is for New Delhi. Due to difference in the time of sunrise and noon in different cities, the time of establishment of Ganpati also changes. For example, according to the Panchang, this time in Mumbai is from 11:20 am to 1:48 pm, whereas in Chandigarh the Muhurta is given to be around 11:04 am to 1:33 pm. Therefore, for puja, it is important to see the local almanac of your city.
Avoid repeatedly lifting or changing the place of the idol. Keep it in a clean, safe and respectable place. Complete the preparations for the puja first and when the auspicious time starts, take a resolution and establish it properly. The most important thing is not to consider arrival and installation as the same process. If there is a difference between the local calendar and family tradition, it would be better to perform the puja accordingly.
