Govardhan Puja 2025: Govardhan Puja is a festival for all of us that touches the heart. It is also called Annakoot Utsav, and it is celebrated on the Pratipada of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. Remember that story of how Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Mountain on his little finger to save the people of Braj from the anger of Indra. This puja is done in his memory. Cows are worshiped, considering them to be the form of Goddess Lakshmi, and they also remember Lord Krishna and Mount Govardhan in a special way. It is celebrated with great pomp in North India, especially in Mathura, Vrindavan, Nandgaon, Gokul and Barsana—seeing the atmosphere there makes one happy!

When is this festival?

Govardhan Puja in 2025 is on October 22nd. The Pratipada date began yesterday at 5:54 pm and will continue until 8:16 pm tonight. Get ready quickly!

When to perform the puja?

The best time for puja is when all the planets and stars are favorable. So, here are today's auspicious times—choose any of these, but the morning one seems best:

When does the muhurat start?

  • First: 6:26 AM-8:42 AM
  • Second: 3:29 PM-5:44 PM
  • Third: 5:44 PM-6:10 PM

Get up early in the morning, take a bath, and begin; you'll receive blessings for the day.

How to perform the puja? Step-by-step guide

Now comes the real fun—the puja method. I've kept it simple so you can easily perform it at home. Just do it with devotion, and everything else will fall into place.

  • Preparation: Get up early. If it's a family tradition, massage your face with a little oil, then take a bath. Your mind will be pure.
  • Make Govardhan Parvat: Build a small mound of fresh cow dung at the main entrance of your house or in your courtyard, creating a mound that resembles Govardhan. Easy, isn't it?
  • The spectacular decoration: Now place small trees, bushes, cowherds, and bulls made of cow dung all around. It will feel as if the entire village of Braj has returned home!
  • Seat Krishna and offer bhog: Place a small idol of Krishna in the center. Then prepare an Annakut offering of 56 dishes—wheat products, rice, gram flour dishes, green vegetables… whatever is available at home, mix it all and offer it.

Listen to or read the story of Govardhan. Then distribute the prasad to everyone and eat with your family. The joy will be doubled!
