New Delhi: According to the Hindu calendar, the new moon day of the Magha month is called Mauni Amavasya. This day holds great religious and spiritual significance. In 2026, several auspicious yogas (planetary combinations) are forming on Mauni Amavasya, making the worship and charity performed on this day even more fruitful. Taking a holy dip, giving charity, chanting mantras, performing penance, and observing a vow of silence are considered very auspicious on this day.
According to the Vedic calendar, the new moon of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the Magha month will begin at 12:04 AM on January 17th and end at 1:22 AM on January 18th. According to the Udaya Tithi (sunrise time), Mauni Amavasya will be celebrated on January 18, 2026.

Observe a vow of silence and speak as little as possible on this day. Donate food, clothes, sesame seeds, jaggery, or black sesame seeds to the needy. Offer oblations for the peace of your ancestors. Worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi; this brings happiness and prosperity to the home. Stay away from anger, lies, and negative thoughts.
Wake up early in the morning and take a bath. It is best to bathe in a river, otherwise, add Ganga water to your bathwater at home. After bathing, offer Arghya (water offering) to the Sun God. Then, after wearing clean clothes, worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Offer basil leaves, flowers, incense, and lamps, and chant Vishnu mantras or the Gayatri mantra. Finally, donate according to your means, and maintain restraint and silence throughout the day.
