Preparations are underway for the Kawad Yatra 2025, set to commence on July 11 during the holy month of Sawan. This revered pilgrimage, dedicated to Lord Shiva, will see millions of Kanwariyas carry Ganga Jal from sacred sites to offer at Shiva temples, culminating on Sawan Shivratri, July 23. The Yatra embodies devotion, sacrifice, and spiritual renewal.
The act is believed to cleanse sins and fulfill devotees’ wishes, drawing lakhs annually.
Popular routes include Haridwar to Delhi (210 km), covering Shiva temples like Daksh Prajapati in Kankhal, and Sultanganj to Deoghar (110 km), ending at Baba Baidyanath Dham. Kanwariyas travel barefoot, carrying decorated kawads (bamboo poles with water pots), often in groups chanting “Bol Bam.”
Kanwariyas begin with a holy dip in the Ganga, fasting or eating satvik food during the journey. On reaching temples, devotees perform Rudrabhishekam, offering milk, bilva leaves, and jal. Authorities mandate registration at starting points, ban plastic kawads, and restrict loudspeakers to ensure safety and eco-friendliness. Medical camps and security along routes support pilgrims.
State governments are enhancing facilities, with Uttar Pradesh and Bihar deploying 10,000 police and 50 mobile medical units. Devotees are advised to carry ID, wear sturdy footwear, and stay hydrated.
