During puja, it is advised to stand facing north with pure water or Ganga water in a copper or silver vessel. After this, offer water on the central part and round part of the water container. Finally, while chanting 'Om Namah Shivay' or 'Shri Shivay Namstubhyam', offer water in a thin stream on the Shivalinga.
After taking bath in the morning, wear clean clothes and take a pledge to fast or worship. After this, offer Panchamrit i.e. milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar on Shivling and then take a bath with pure water. White sandalwood, ashes, akshat, belpatra, datura, hemp, shami patra and dakta flowers can be offered to Bholenath.
After the puja, recite Shiva Chalisa or Rudrashtakam. After this, offer fruits, sweets or kheer to Lord Shiva. Perform Aarti with incense and lamp and seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva for any mistake committed unknowingly.
