Patna: A tragic road accident took place on Friday night during the idol immersion procession of Vishwakarma Puja in Sasaram, Bihar. A speeding dumper hit the tractor carrying the statue heavily on NH-119 near Ramdihra village of Amjhaur police station area. Two youths died in the accident, while five people were injured.
After the incident, there was a situation of tension on the spot. The angry mob set fire to the dumper said to be responsible for the accident. People also pelted stones at the police who came to extinguish the fire, in which two policemen were injured.
According to the information, the statue was installed in Ramdihara village on the occasion of Vishwakarma Puja. On Friday evening, the villagers were going towards Sonbhadra river for immersion with the idol on a tractor.
A large number of people were also walking on foot behind the tractor. Meanwhile, an uncontrolled dumper hit the tractor heavily on NH-119. The collision was so strong that there was chaos among the people participating in the procession.
Ashish Sharma and Ajit Chandravanshi died in the accident. Five other people have been injured. The people participating in the procession, with the help of the police, took the injured to the hospital for treatment.
On reaching the hospital, doctors declared two youths dead. As soon as the news of death in the accident came to light, the anger of the people present at the spot increased.
After the accident, people surrounded the hit dumper. Meanwhile, the driver and helper of the dumper fled from the spot taking advantage of the darkness.
After this the angry people set the dumper on fire. Within no time the vehicle started burning. On receiving information, police reached the spot and tried to extinguish the fire.
The crowd started pelting stones at the police team trying to extinguish the fire in the dumper. During this period two policemen were injured. After much effort the police controlled the situation.
The police took the bodies of both the deceased into their custody and sent them to Sadar Hospital for post-mortem.
On Saturday, local people blocked the Rohtas-Dehri road in protest against the accident. The protesters stopped the traffic by placing the bodies of the dead on the road.
SDM Nilesh Kumar reached the spot and was trying to clear the jam by convincing the people. In view of the situation, police from several police stations have been deployed on the spot.
At present, the police are investigating the matter and the absconding dumper driver and helper are being searched.
