New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a supplementary charge sheet in the Delhi court in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) 2026 paper leak case, claiming completion of the investigation. Another private person has been made an accused in this charge sheet filed on Wednesday. Earlier, the investigating agency had filed a chargesheet against 13 people.
According to CBI, in the investigation so far no evidence has been found to frame charges against any government official. Amidst the questions raised regarding the fairness of the medical entrance examination, the investigation of this case has been keeping an eye on the students and parents across the country.
According to people associated with the investigation, the CBI filed a supplementary chargesheet in the court on Wednesday and made another private person an accused in the case. Earlier, names of 13 people were included in the first charge sheet filed on July 28. These were said to include the names of subject experts appointed by the National Testing Agency (NTA), alleged middlemen and representatives associated with coaching institutes. After the new charge sheet, the number of accused in the case has increased. However, being named in the charge sheet does not mean conviction. The final decision on the charges against the accused will be taken only after hearing in court.
According to CBI, during the investigation, no evidence was found against any government official on the basis on which he could be made an accused. The investigating agency investigated the role of private individuals, alleged middlemen and others associated with the examination. The names of subject matter experts related to NTA were also included in the charge sheet filed earlier in the case. The agency's claim that evidence was not found against government officials is part of the findings of the investigation. However, the full picture of the case will become clear from the documents presented in the court and the further judicial process.
The controversy surrounding the NEET UG 2026 exam grew when similarities between the questions asked in the exam and the alleged guess paper came to light. In Guess Paper, questions are usually prepared on the basis of previous years' questions, exam pattern and probable topics. According to the report, during investigation, at least 120 questions of the alleged guess paper were found to match the exam question paper. After this, questions started being raised on the fairness of the examination and the investigation of the case was handed over to the CBI.
According to the report, the exam was conducted on May 3 and allegations related to paper leak came into limelight about a week later. After this, on May 12, the National Examination Agency announced the cancellation of the examination. The cancellation of the exam affected the preparation, time and future plans of lakhs of candidates. Students and parents raised questions regarding the need for re-examination and transparency of the selection process. There were protests in different parts of the country on this issue and the matter became a topic of political debate.
After the filing of the supplementary charge sheet, the next process of the case in the court will be important. The court will consider the evidence and allegations presented in the charge sheet and decide further action as per law. CBI has said that the investigation has been completed, but this does not mean that all the allegations have been judicially proved. The accused will get an opportunity to present their side in the case and the final decision will be taken by the court. Maintaining transparency and credibility in a big entrance exam like NEET UG is a matter related to the future of millions of candidates. Therefore, fair disposal of this case and judicial review of the findings of the investigation is considered very important.
