Mumbai: The Delhi High Court on Friday upheld the conviction of Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav in various cheque bounce cases registered against him and also sentenced Rajpal to undergo simple imprisonment of three months in each seven cases. All sentences have been directed to run concurrently.
The Delhi High Court has upheld actor Rajpal Yadav's conviction in a check-bounce case. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma reserved her decision on April 2 after repeated attempts at compromise failed. The High Court expressed displeasure with Yadav's changing stance regarding repayment of the outstanding amount.
Following the court's continued lack of response, the court stated, "Opportunities were granted to honour the settlement. He [Yadav] and his counsel made several statements and assurances, and despite these repeated opportunities and assurances, he failed to honour the undertakings."
The Delhi High Court has sentenced actor Rajpal Yadav to three months' simple imprisonment in each of seven check bounce cases. The court ordered that all sentences will run concurrently, so he will serve a total of three months.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1.05 crore (US$1.05 million) in each case, bringing the total fine to Rs 7.35 crore (US$7.35 million). According to the court order, Rs 1.475 crore (US$1.75 million) will be paid to the complainant and Rs 25,000 to the state in each case.
During the hearing, a bench of Justice Swaran Kanta Sharma termed the actor's behaviour as dubious and said that he was given several opportunities to pay the amount, but he completely failed to fulfil his promises.
The Court has also given two months time to Yadav to challenge the judgment in the Supreme Court
