New Delhi: A special MP-MLA court in Agra, led by Judge Lokesh Kumar, has approved a revision plea demanding sedition and farmer-insult charges against Kangana Ranaut. The court ruled that the case will return to the lower court which had earlier dismissed it. The decision came after hearing Kangana’s legal team on November 10, when the court reserved its verdict before passing the order on Wednesday.
The complaint, filed by lawyer Ramshankar Sharma, accuses Kangana of making derogatory remarks about farmers during an interview on August 26, 2024. According to the plea, her comments deeply hurt the sentiments of lakhs of farmers across India. The case seeks action under Sections 356 and 152 of the Indian Penal Code, treating her statements as an act of sedition.
Kangana, who represents Mandi in Himachal Pradesh as a BJP MP, has already received six court summons but hasn’t appeared yet. Despite repeated notices, she continues to skip hearings. The court has now made it clear that if she ignores future summons, legal action will proceed in her absence, possibly including a warrant.
During the farmers’ protest in 2020, Kangana posted several controversial statements on social media. She compared protesting farmers to “Khalistani terrorists” and said, “They are pressuring the government, but we should not forget Indira Gandhi, who crushed them under her shoes.” Her remarks triggered widespread outrage and led to multiple complaints nationwide.
On November 27, 2020, Kangana had shared a photo of an elderly woman claiming she was Bilkis Dadi from the Shaheen Bagh protests, writing that she was “available for ₹100.” The post went viral and sparked massive anger among farmers and activists. Although she deleted the post later, screenshots continue to circulate online as evidence in ongoing cases.
With the court reopening the case and issuing repeated summons, Kangana may soon face arrest if she continues to avoid appearance. The controversy has sparked a political storm — critics call her statements divisive and disrespectful, while her supporters say this is an attack on free speech. Either way, the “Queen” actress’s legal troubles are far from over.
