Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s brief message congratulating actor Shah Rukh Khan on winning a National Award led to an equally clever reply from the actor himself. Known for his rich vocabulary, Tharoor kept it simple this time, and Shah Rukh responded by saying he wouldn’t have understood anything more “magniloquent and sesquipedalian.”

The actor was awarded the National Film Award for Best Actor for his role in the 2023 film Jawan, marking the first time he has received this honour in his three-decade-long career. The announcement was made on August 2 during the 71st National Film Awards declaration.

Shashi Tharoor, who is often known for using complex English words, took to social media with a straightforward message. He wrote on Twitter (now X), “A National Treasure wins a National Award! Congratulations, @iamsrk!

Shah Rukh Khan, true to his charming and humorous style, responded with a post that mirrored Tharoor’s love for big words. He replied, "Thanks for the straightforward compliment, Mr. Tharoor… I might not have grasped anything more magniloquent and sesquipedalian… haha (sic).

The award-winning film Jawan was one of the biggest box office successes of 2023. Directed by Atlee, the movie featured Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role as a father and his identical son. The cast also included Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi in key roles. Deepika Padukone appeared in a short but important role as the mother of the younger Shah Rukh Khan’s character.

The story of Jawan centres on a man named Azad, who works as a jailer at a women’s prison. He secretly leads a group of prisoners on missions that aim to expose corruption and wrongdoing across the country. The film connected with audiences and critics alike, helping Shah Rukh secure his first-ever National Award in his 33-year film journey.

Shah Rukh Khan's Thank-You Video After The Win

Shah Rukh Khan posted a video on social media after being honoured with the National Award. Wearing a sling on one arm and standing in front of a bookshelf, he thanked the jury and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. In the video, he expressed how honoured he felt to be recognised.

“To be given the National Award is a moment I’ll always remember. I thank the jury, the chairman, the I&B Ministry, and everyone who believed I deserved this. I also want to thank the writers and directors I worked with during 2023,” Khan said in the video. He specifically mentioned filmmakers who were part of his successful projects that year. He thanks Raju, Saeed Sir, and all the team members of Jawan.

It means a lot to me to win this national award. It was not just about receiving praise but about understanding the importance of his work, he said. “It tells me that what I do matters. It’s a reminder to keep creating, keep improving, and never stop. In today’s world, where there is so much noise, being truly heard is a gift,” Shah Rukh shared.

He explained that acting isn’t just his profession—it’s his duty. He promised to keep learning and giving more to cinema. Bollywood King Khan is currently working on his upcoming film, King. The film features his daughter Suhana Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Abhishek Bachchan. Reports say that his arm injury, seen in the video, happened while filming King. He is now recovering.
