Mali: Serious news has come from the West African country Mali, where unknown gunmen have kidnapped five Indian citizens. Company and security sources confirmed this on Friday. Mali is currently going through a period of jihadist violence and instability, which has raised serious questions over the safety of foreign workers.
According to sources, the incident took place in the Kobri region of western Mali, when some unidentified gunmen abducted Indian workers who were working on an electrification project. This kidnapping took place on Thursday, but the information came to light on Friday.
“We can confirm that five of our Indian employees have been abducted,” a representative of the company that carried out the kidnapping told AFP. He also said that due to security reasons, the remaining Indian employees have been safely evacuated to the capital, Bama.
Till now no organization or militant group has claimed responsibility for this kidnapping. The activities of Islamic extremists have increased in Mali in the past few years, and incidents of targeting foreign citizens have also increased.
After this incident, the Indian government has sought a complete report from its embassy in Mali and contacted the local administration. The Ministry of External Affairs has said that it is under constant surveillance and efforts are underway to ensure the safe return of Indian citizens.
It is noteworthy that Mali has been struggling with insurgency and terrorist violence for a long time. Several jihadist organizations are active in the northern and western parts of the country, often targeting foreign companies and their employees.
At present the investigation into the kidnapping is going on. Security agencies and local administration are busy searching for Indian citizens. The Government of India has said that every possible diplomatic and humanitarian effort will be made so that all Indians can return safely.
