New Delhi: In the last few days, the conflict on the borders of Afghanistan and Pakistan has intensified. After the Afghan Taliban government allegedly launched attacks on border posts with Pakistan, Islamabad has launched massive retaliatory measures. Both sides have stepped towards a situation of war by accusing each other.
Pakistan says that its post near the border was attacked by Taliban fighters. Initial information revealed casualties among soldiers. After this the army was given free rein. People living in the border areas have reported hearing sounds of firing and explosions throughout the night. However the Taliban administration is not accepting responsibility for the attack.
Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said that now "the limit of patience has reached its end". He made it clear that Pakistan will not compromise on its security. In his statement he also mentioned India and alleged that there could be an external hand behind the instability in the region. This statement has given a political color to the dispute beyond just a border dispute.
It has been claimed in Pakistani media that many hideouts were destroyed in the retaliatory attacks. Some reports also claim that a large number of Taliban fighters have been killed. But these figures could not be independently confirmed. On the other hand, the Afghan side says that civilian areas were damaged in the air strikes. The truth lies somewhere between the two claims.
The Taliban government has called Pakistan's action a provocative step. They say they were only monitoring their border and any aggressive action would be responded to. He also talked about talks, but his tone remained strict.
Analysts believe that if both the countries do not choose the path of dialogue soon, the situation may drag on. This area has already been sensitive. In such a situation, any wrong assessment can lead to a big conflict. At present, tension continues on the border and both sides seem to be adamant on their positions.
