Beijing: Relations between Beijing and Taipei once again seem to have reached the lowest level of tension. On Monday, China announced a major military exercise very near Taiwan. China's army, navy, and rocket force are involved in this drill. Beijing claims that this preparation is to assess the war situation and prevent any attempt for Taiwan's "independence."

There is anger in Taiwan after this step, and it has also activated its forces in response.

What is the intention behind this action of China?

China says that Taiwan will not be allowed any outside military help. The drill is named “Just Mission 2025” and is taking place in five maritime zones around Taiwan. These areas extend from the Taiwan Strait to the north, southwest, southeast, and eastern parts.

According to China's Eastern Theater Command, there will be a ban on sea and airspace for 10 hours.  The aim of the exercise is to “gain control on land, sea, and air.”  There will be a simulation of the blockade of essential ports and supply routes. It is clear that this is not just a drill but also a military message.

What is Taiwan's response?

The Taiwan government has called the exercises a “direct military threat.” Presidential Office spokeswoman Karen Kuo said the move threatens stability in the Indo-Pacific and ignores international rules. In an attempt to intimidate neighboring countries, Taiwan's military also deployed "appropriate numbers" of forces around the island, set up a response control center, and conducted quick response exercises. Taipei says they are prepared for every possible situation.

How did the tension reach this point?

This is not a sudden situation. The atmosphere has continued to deteriorate since US leader Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan in 2022. China believes this was a sign of US support for Taiwan. Since then, Beijing has increased the number of military flights, conducted maritime siege exercises, and adopted a tough stance on international forums.

What could happen next?

This tension is not just a matter between two countries. This may impact the Asia-Pacific security framework, international trade routes, and US-China relations. Experts believe that if talks do not take place, the situation may become more serious in the coming months.
