Washington: During the midterm elections held in the US on November 3, the Justice Department of the Trump administration deployed about 1,000 election monitors and observers across the country. The Justice Department has described it as the largest election surveillance operation in its history. For the first time this deployment has been done in all 50 states of America. However, political controversy has also started regarding this decision. Democratic leaders and organisations working for voting rights have alleged that this move could create an atmosphere of fear among voters.

According to a Reuters report, about two-thirds of the areas where monitors were deployed were areas where Democratic candidate Kamala Harris got more votes than Trump in the 2024 presidential election. These also include many areas where the number of black and Latino voters is high.

In which areas were the maximum number of election monitors deployed?

Monitors and observers were deployed by the Justice Department in different areas of all 50 states. According to Reuters analysis, a large number of these are from those areas where Kamala Harris had got the lead in the last presidential election. Many such areas fall in those states which can play an important role in deciding the majority in the US Senate.

The population of black and Latino voters is also quite high in these areas. Because of this, organisations related to voting rights have raised questions regarding the deployment of monitors.

What reason did the Trump administration give for deploying election monitors?

The US Justice Department says these monitors are deployed to monitor compliance with federal voting laws. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon defended the decision, saying the department was working to ensure transparency and fairness in the elections.

According to the Justice Department, monitors can observe the electoral process at polling stations, but they do not have the authority to conduct on-the-spot checks or prevent any voter from voting.

Why did Democratic leaders object?

Democratic leaders and voting rights groups have expressed concerns about the deployment of election monitors. They say the presence of such a large number of federal officers could intimidate voters and affect the voting process.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta said his state would also deploy its own observers, who will keep an eye on the activities of federal monitors. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has called this move an attempt to intimidate voters. He alleged that the Trump administration is preparing to challenge him if the election results are not in its favour. These allegations have been made by Democratic leaders.

What is the whole controversy about voting in California?

The deployment of election monitors has come at a time when a legal dispute is going on between the Trump administration and the state government over more than 20 thousand mail-in ballots in California. The administration had alleged that these ballots were issued to non-citizens.

The Trump administration had also approached the Supreme Court in this matter, but its petition was rejected. This entire controversy has intensified the debate in America regarding the electoral process, voter rights and the role of the federal government.
