Donald Trump Changes AI’s Name, US Government Will Now Call It ‘Super Intelligence’

Washington: US President Donald Trump has taken a major administrative decision regarding artificial intelligence, i.e., AI. The executive order signed by him calls for the use of the terms ‘Super Intelligence’ and ‘SI’ in place of ‘Artificial Intelligence’ and ‘AI’ in the functioning of the US federal government.

This order has come at a time when there is intense discussion in America regarding the rapid development of AI technology, national security and global technological competition.

Why will SI be written instead of AI in government documents?

Trump's order is titled 'The Beginning of the Era of Super Intelligence'. Under this, federal government departments and agencies will have to use the terms ‘Super Intelligence’ and ‘SI’ in official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports and administrative policy documents.

It has been said in the order that this change will be implemented to the maximum extent permitted by law. However, pre-existing government records, regulations, contracts, grants, and historical documents will not be recreated due to this change.

Why did the Trump administration suggest the need to change the name of AI?

According to the US administration, the capabilities of modern AI systems have gone beyond the old idea, under which artificial intelligence was seen as a technology that imitates human intelligence or automates parts of it.

The order states that modern systems are helping in increasing human creativity and capabilities. Many fields of science, medicine, and human endeavor have opened up possibilities that were previously considered difficult or impossible.

On this basis, the administration has expressed the need for change in the official terminology.

Will the definition of AI change in US law also?

At present, only the existing statutory definition related to artificial intelligence is applicable in US law. According to the new order, the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology will have to present the proposed legislation to Congress within 60 days.

This proposal calls for setting a new legal definition of 'Super Intelligence' at the federal level and suggesting necessary changes in the existing laws.

That is, the decision to change the terminology in government documents has immediate effect, whereas changing the legal definition will require a separate legislative process.

The order came after Trump's high-level lunch meeting with prominent people from the technology sector. Many big names from the tech industry including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai and Jensen Huang attended the meeting.

Trump described this technological change as a big opportunity for America and said that its impact could be bigger than the Internet.

After the meeting, tech companies and administration officials shared information regarding the White House Accord. Its main focus was on developing superintelligence in a safe manner.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg called people's trust in technology important. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stressed the need for collaboration between the tech industry and the government.

Issues like national security and global technological competition were also discussed in the meeting. Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton said it is important for the US to remain a leader in the AI ​​field from a national security perspective.
