Washington: Tension between Washington and Tehran seems to be reaching dangerous levels once again. US President Donald Trump on Sunday shared a picture on his social media platform Truth Social, in which the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important sea routes, was described as "NEW US Territory". After this post of Trump, Iran has also given a sharp reaction and has made it clear that if America's attitude does not change then the question of opening the Strait of Hormuz does not arise.
Trump has already talked about declaring Hormuz as American territory. But Iran's top security official Mohsen Rezaei rejected America's claim, saying that Washington's claim of control over the strait is far from reality. Iran says that America should first change its behaviour and policies, only then any further talks be made regarding this important sea route.
Meanwhile, America is preparing to impose new and very stringent economic sanctions on Iran. US Finance Minister Scott Besant has described these as one of the toughest sanctions in history. Washington has also appealed to China for cooperation in putting pressure on Iran's oil business.
Iran has rejected US pressure, calling these proposed sanctions against international law. Tehran says that other countries should also avoid getting involved in America's economic campaign.
Tension in the Strait of Hormuz is also affecting the global energy market. This sea route is very important for the international supply of oil and gas. Due to the crisis, the movement of ships is said to be much less than the normal level.
According to US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, the US military helped move an average of about 8 million barrels of oil per day during seven days. However, this is much less than the more than 20 million barrels a day of oil that passed through this route before the war.
Despite the tension, Iran has not completely closed down the option of diplomacy. President Masoud Pejeshkian has said that the dispute will be resolved through negotiations. On the other hand, Trump is continuously increasing pressure on Iran. In such a situation, the Strait of Hormuz has now become not just a sea route between America and Iran but the biggest centre of the battle for power, oil and global influence.
