Washington: Amidst the increasing war between America and Iran, a new statement of US President Donald Trump has come out, which has created a stir in international politics. Trump has said that he should be personally involved in the selection of Iran's next supreme leader. He also made it clear that he would not accept Mojtaba Khamenei, son of late Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, under any circumstances.
In an interview, Trump said that America should have a role in appointing the next leader of Iran. He said that if someone associated with the old system comes to power, then a war situation may arise again in the coming few years. Trump made sharp remarks about Mojtaba Khamenei, saying that he is “not suitable” for the post. According to him, Iran needs a leader who can bring stability and peace in the country.
Mojtaba Khamenei is the son of Iran's former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and is considered a leading contender for the post. Born in Mashhad in 1969, Mojtaba also fought with a unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard during the Iran–Iraq War. Over time, his influence in Iran's political and religious structure increased.
However, the US had also imposed sanctions on them in 2019 and accused them of destabilizing regional politics.
Trump's statement indicates that America is concerned about Iran's future ruling system. Giving an example, he said that just as America played a role during the political change in Venezuela, similarly stable leadership is necessary in Iran. Analysts believe that this statement points towards America's strategy in which it wants a change of regime or a new political direction in Iran.
The situation is continuously worsening in the ongoing conflict between Iran and America-Israel. According to reports, so far more than a thousand people have died in this war in Iran and many American military bases have also been attacked. Iran has clearly said that it will avenge the death of its leaders and will continue to challenge the US military presence in the region.
Experts believe that talking about external interference in the selection of a country's leader is a very sensitive issue. This statement by Trump may further increase the tension amid the already ongoing war. At present, the eyes of the whole world are fixed on when Iran announces its next supreme leader and in what direction the politics of the region goes after this.
