Davos (Switzerland): Amid the raging controversy over US intention of annexing Greenland, US President Donald Trump met his Ukraine counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Davos on Thursday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026. Trump described his meeting with Zelenskyy as "very good" and emphasized that the time has come for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.
Following the meeting, which took place in Davos, Switzerland, during the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026, Trump told reporters that the US delegation would soon meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and that strong efforts to stop the war would continue.
"My meeting with Zelenskyy was good. We will be meeting with Putin today or tomorrow. My message is clear – the war must end. Too many people have been killed," Trump said.
The meeting between the two leaders lasted for about an hour and took place behind closed doors. Zelenskyy's press advisor described it as a "good meeting." As he left, Trump reiterated that the war must end. "We hope it will end soon. Too many people are being killed." He also said that stopping the war might take time, but efforts are being intensified. The meeting between the two leaders came at a time when talks to end the war in Ukraine appeared to be reaching a critical juncture. US envoy Steve Witkoff said that only one issue (territorial) remains, on which discussions are stalled. A European official also confirmed this.
Meanwhile, just before meeting with Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was ready to use a portion of the Russian assets seized in the US for the reconstruction of Ukraine after a Russia-Ukraine peace agreement. Putin announced at a meeting of the Russian Security Council that $1 billion from the seized assets could be donated to the "Board of Peace" proposed by Trump.
"Our remaining assets seized in the US can be used for the reconstruction of the damaged areas after a peace treaty. We are discussing this with the US administration," Putin said.
It is reported that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will meet with Putin today to discuss the Ukraine issue.
