Washington: Donald Trump and Nobel Peace Prize—this pair has been in the news for a long time. Trump himself has said many times that his diplomatic efforts are worthy of this honor. And this time reports are saying that his name may actually appear in the list.
Some leaders of Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan have talked about nominating Trump. They say that Trump has helped in resolving many international disputes, hence his name should be considered for this award. The three countries are very different from each other, but they are on the same page on this one issue.
This time a total of 287 nominations have reached the Nobel Committee of Norway. These include 208 individuals and 79 organizations. Like every year, this time too many new faces have emerged, which makes the competition more interesting.
The new secretary of the committee, Christian Berg Harpviken, admitted that the change in names every year is a new experience for him too.
“In today's world, where tension and instability are everywhere, the Peace Prize is more important than ever.” —Kristian Berg Harpviken, Secretary, Nobel Committee
The complete list is not made public, but some names have automatically emerged. These include the names of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, climate activist Greta Thunberg, Moldovan President Maya Sandu and Francesca Albanese, associated with the United Nations.
2023 Nobel laureate Nargess Mohammadi is currently in jail in Iran. Recently he suffered a heart attack, after which concern about his condition has increased worldwide. The Nobel Committee has also expressed seriousness on this and international pressure is continuously increasing.
Nothing has been decided yet. The entire nomination process is confidential and the final decision is taken by the committee; no one else has the say. But it is certain that this time Trump's name is in discussion. Now all eyes are on October when the real answer will emerge.
