Washington: US President Donald Trump has once again described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as his good friend. He said that a trade agreement will soon be reached between Washington and New Delhi. Trump said that America's trade with India is now in a better condition than before.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Thursday, Trump said that India took advantage of America for many years. They used to charge us very high tariffs and did not give anything in return. Now the situation has completely changed. We are making good money with India. Trump further said that we will reach a deal because I like your Prime Minister Narendra Modi very much. They are my good friends. We get along well, and our relationship is strong.
Trump emphasised his personal relationship with PM Modi. He said that there is good mutual understanding between the two leaders. For this reason he is confident that the trade agreement between the two countries will be completed soon. Trump says that now America is not incurring losses from India.
This statement has come at a time when America on Tuesday announced the imposition of new tariffs on goods coming from 60 countries. America has cited the issue related to forced labour. India is also included in this list.
US Trade Representative has released a list of 54 economies. This includes countries like India, China, Japan, Australia. Additional duty of up to 10 percent or 12.5 percent may be imposed on goods from these countries. America says that this step has been taken regarding labor standards.
After the announcement of the new tariff, there were fears that trade tensions between the two countries might increase. But Trump's latest statement indicates that the door to talks is open. There is hope for a deal because of the personal relationship between Trump and PM Modi. Experts believe that if an agreement is reached then the impact of the new tariff may be reduced.
