Washington: Despite the increasing tension between Iran and Israel, US President Donald Trump has made it clear that he is not going to back down on the nuclear deal with Tehran. Trump says that if there is any agreement between America and Iran, then Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will have no option but to accept it.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump said that Iran's recent missile attacks have not changed his strategy. "I take the decisions. All the major decisions are in my hands. Netanyahu doesn't decide what happens," he said.
Trump also said that Netanyahu will have to accept any agreement between America and Iran.
On Sunday night, Iran fired ballistic missiles towards Israel. The attack came on the same day Israel took action on the outskirts of Beirut. It was the first major military action since the US made a ceasefire proposal to Lebanon last week.
However, Trump says that despite these incidents, diplomatic efforts will continue and he does not consider the chances of an agreement to be over.
According to reports, Trump had planned to talk to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and advise him to avoid retaliating against Iran. He believes that new military action could affect the negotiation process.
"It certainly won't help the negotiations," Trump said in an interview with Fox News. While giving a message to Iran, he said, "You have fired your missiles, now enough." Come back to the negotiating table and make a compromise."
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said US bases and Israeli interests are still legitimate targets. They allege that Israel has violated agreements related to Lebanon.
An Israeli official said any direct attack from Iran would be responded to. It was also indicated that such incidents could make Israel's military campaign more extensive.
Trump said that if talks fail, then many options including military action will remain open. In another interview with NBC News, Trump said, "We are very close to an agreement, but if it does not happen, the consequences could be serious."
