Washington: A social media post by US President Donald Trump has once again intensified the discussion in American politics regarding the 2028 presidential election. Trump has shared a picture in which he is seen wearing a cap written ‘TRUMP 2028’. Along with the picture he wrote, “We are going to win." After this post of Trump, there is speculation about his next political step.

This is not the first time that Trump has given such a hint regarding 2028. Even before this, he had publicly talked about the possibilities of a third term. However, the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution prohibits a person from being elected to the presidency more than twice. Trump has been elected president in 2016 and 2024.

What did Trump show in the picture?

In Trump's new post, he is seen wearing a cap written 'TRUMP 2028'. In the caption of the post he claimed victory. After this picture surfaced, questions started being raised on social media whether Trump wants to give any serious political message regarding the 2028 presidential elections.

However, on the basis of this post alone, it would not be correct to say that Trump has officially announced to contest elections in 2028.

Does Trump want to become president for the third time?

Trump has already given statements regarding a third term. He had said in the past that his supporters wanted him to seek a third term as president and had also mentioned possible paths to this end. However, US law poses a major constitutional hurdle in this case.

Recently, while talking about term limits, Trump had said that the law in this regard is very strong. This indicated that he was aware of the real situation regarding constitutional limits.

Why has the discussion about 2028 started now?

The 2028 presidential election in America is still a long way off, but discussions have started between the two major parties regarding possible candidates. In such a situation, Trump's picture 'TRUMP 2028' has further fuelled the political debate. There is also discussion in the media that Trump may support a favourite candidate of the Republican Party instead of contesting the elections directly.

While Trump's supporters are seeing his post as an indication of his future political campaign, critics are linking it to the old debate of his third term.

Will Trump be able to contest elections in 2028?

Under the current constitutional system, it is not easy for Trump to contest the presidential election in 2028. The 22nd Amendment prevents a person from being elected president more than twice. Trump has been elected president twice.

Therefore, the cap and post with ‘TRUMP 2028’ may have increased the speculations, but it cannot be considered as an announcement of his official candidacy yet.
