Tehran: The military conflict between the US and Iran that has been going on for the last five weeks reached a new and frightening turn on Thursday. US and Israeli air forces targeted the B1 bridge near the city of Karaj, west of Tehran, and destroyed a large part of it. Eight people died and 95 others were injured in this attack.  Hours after the attack, President Donald Trump shared a video of the bridge collapse on social media and directly threatened Iran with more attacks if a deal was not reached.

Was the B1 bridge the main target of the attack?

The target of joint US and Israeli air strikes on April 2, 2026 was the B1 bridge, a structure widely described as 'the most complex bridge in the world'. This bridge was located on the highway connecting Tehran to Karaj. The 136-meter-high bridge is considered the tallest bridge in the Middle East and served as a vital link on the Northern Karaj Bypass, connecting Tehran to Karaj and facilitating traffic towards the northern provinces.  This bridge was currently under construction and its 447-foot (136 m) tall pillars make it the tallest bridge in the Middle East.

How much damage was caused in the attack and were the targets targeted twice?

The US and Israel attacked the B1 bridge twice on Thursday, about an hour apart between the two attacks, completely destroying the bridge. The second attack occurred while relief and rescue teams were arriving at the scene to help victims of the first attack.  Godratullah Saif, deputy governor of Alborz province, told state TV and Fars news agency that the attack killed eight people and wounded 95 others.

Did Trump himself take responsibility for the attack?

Trump posted a 10-second video on Truth Social that showed the B1 bridge collapsing amid black smoke. He wrote, "Iran's largest bridge has collapsed, it will never be used again, and there is more to come!" The time has come for Iran to compromise, otherwise it will be too late." Earlier on Wednesday night, in an address to the nation, Trump had threatened to send Iran "back to the Stone Age".

What strategic logic did America give behind this attack?

US defense officials say the bridge was used by the Iranian armed forces to supply goods to military units stationed in Tehran. A second defense official described it as a "planned military supply route" to maintain Iran's ballistic missile and attack drone capabilities.  However, the official did not clarify whether the route was in active use at the time of the attack.

Can this war now take a more terrible form?

Trump said in his address that the US would launch "very tough" attacks on Iran in the next two to three weeks. Netanyahu claimed that the US-Israeli strikes had eliminated Iran's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile production capabilities.  Meanwhile, US-Iran talks are going on on two different fronts. on one hand, Vice President JD Vance is in touch with Tehran through the Pakistani Army Chief, while on the other hand, US Ambassador Steve Witkoff is talking directly to the Iranian Foreign Minister. Aggressive rhetoric continues from both sides and tension remains at its peak in the Gulf region.
