Kyiv: Amid the Russia-Ukraine war, a new dispute has emerged over the Starlink and Starshield satellite systems. Ukraine alleges that the Russian military used these systems in drone attacks targeting people. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, after the restrictions imposed on these services, their functionality has returned to normal levels.
On the other hand, there was no immediate public reaction to these allegations from Elon Musk. This controversy has arisen at a time when communications technology and drone operations have become an important part of military strategy during the Ukraine war.
Musk said on the social media platform X that the Ukrainian military violated Starlink's terms of service and used it in offensive drone strikes designed to kill people. According to him, it was for this reason that the use of these systems was banned last week.
However, there was no immediate public reaction from Ukrainian officials to Musk's allegations. In such a situation, independent verification of the statements of both the parties and the facts related to the use of these systems is important.
According to President Zelensky, the sanctions imposed on Starlink and Starshield had previously limited the speed of these systems. According to him, limiting Starlink's speed to 160 kilometers per hour created difficulties in Ukrainian operations to intercept Russian attack drones and led to the cancellation of some military activities.
Starlink plays a vital role in maintaining communications between military units deployed on Ukraine's front lines. At the same time, the technology related to Starshield is used in government and defense related works.
The situation between the US and Musk regarding responsibility for the sanctions imposed on Starlink and Starshield is not clear. According to a Reuters report, the order to limit Starshield's speed came from within the White House. This controversy came to light amid increasing tension over America's Ukraine policy.
After the sanctions, US President Donald Trump had announced an agreement to buy diesel from Russia and also put pressure on Ukraine to stop attacks on Russian oil refineries.
Zelensky said Saturday that Starlink and Starshield speeds were back to normal. However, independent confirmation is required on the technical details and conditions of restrictions associated with the resumption of these services.
This development has sparked a new debate about the dependence on private companies' technology in Ukraine's military strategy. As the role of satellite communications and drone technology continues to grow in warfare, restrictions on these services could directly impact military operations.
