New Delhi: Muslim student organizations sacrificed two cows on the occasion of Navratri at Jagannath University in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The beef was then cooked and eaten near a temple within the university. The incident has sparked unrest in Dhaka. Hindu organizations are protesting, while the university administration, despite numerous efforts, failed to stop the incident.

According to BBC Bangla, the unrest began after an incident on October 12. On this day, some Muslim organizations cooked biryani with beef in front of a temple located inside the university, which was protested by Hindu organizations.

Following this, the university administration issued a notice stating that such an act was illegal within the university. Following the notice, Muslim student organizations announced plans to slaughter cows within the university.

Purchase of 2 cows by raising funds

According to the report, university students began collecting donations for cow slaughter. An organization called Majlis led the effort. Each student collected a donation of 50 rupees. The money was then used to purchase a cow, while a Muslim organization donated a cow to the students.

According to the university administration, both cows were slaughtered inside the university. The students then cooked and ate the meat. The university administration and the government are on the back foot regarding the entire matter.

The Bangladesh government has not issued any statement on the matter. The university administration, however, maintains that there has been no controversy over the matter, and therefore, they cannot do anything.

Hindus feeling unsafe in Bangladesh

Hindus constitute over 8 percent of Bangladesh's population. While they felt safe under Sheikh Hasina's rule, attacks on Hindus have been ongoing since her coup. According to the Awami League, this year, idols and pandals were vandalized at approximately 34 locations in Bangladesh during Durga Puja.

Sheikh Hasina herself issued a statement calling it unfortunate. She said that atrocities against minorities have increased in Bangladesh since Tariq Rahman's government came to power.
