Germany: On Sunday, a bloody clash occurred in Gurdwara Singh Sabha in the city of Moers in the North Rhine-Westphalia province of Germany when the religious program was about to begin. More than 40 people got involved in the violent clash, in which 11 people were injured. The police had to launch a massive operation. Seeing the Sangat gathered for worship, they started running out of the Gurdwara, which had turned into a battlefield, to save their lives. This shameful incident has shocked the entire Sikh community.
This clash was not the result of just one day of anger. There had been tension between the former and current members of the Gurdwara Management Committee for a long time. The root of the dispute was financial matters including control of the Gurudwara and Golak (offerings). It is being said that the former officials were trying to regain control after losing in the elections. The Jathedar Hawara Committee also agreed that when there is a conflict over Golak, it is against the basic principles of Gurmat.
According to eyewitnesses, a group first created chaos by using pepper spray, after which knives and sabers started flashing. It is clearly visible in the viral video that turbans are being bounced and religious weapons are being misused. Cartridge shells were also recovered from the spot, which deepened the suspicion of firing. As soon as the news of firing was received, the police deployed the elite commando squad.
Police deployed around 100 officers and surrounded the Gurudwara. Aerial surveillance was also done from a helicopter. Officers also entered the building fearing a suspected armed man, although no gunman was found. A suspect has been detained and investigation has begun.
Most of the 11 injured had head injuries. Emergency services arrived to treat the injured one. At present all the injured are said to be out of danger.
The Jathedar Hawara Committee strongly condemned the incident, saying it amounted to desecration of a place of reverence for the Sikhs and termed it a 'betrayal of the Guru'. This violence within the sacred walls of the Gurudwara forces not only Germany but the Sikh community around the world to introspect. The investigating agencies are investigating the entire matter in depth and many more important revelations are likely to be made in the coming days.
