As geopolitical tensions escalate globally, concerns about the possibility of a world war are growing. The conflict that began in Gaza two years ago has now expanded to involve Iran, with Israel and Iran exchanging severe attacks. Meanwhile, the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine continues to pose a serious threat to international stability. According to the Global Peace Index 2025, the world is experiencing its steepest decline in peace since the end of World War II. Against this backdrop, understanding which countries are considered the most and least peaceful has become more relevant than ever.

Each year, the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) publishes the Global Peace Index to evaluate the relative peacefulness of countries around the world. The 2025 edition highlights those nations that rank highest in safety and those experiencing extreme unrest. Countries that perform well on the index typically have strong governance, low levels of corruption, and reliable infrastructure—key indicators of safety and stability.

Top 10 Safest Countries in the World

Once again, Iceland leads the rankings as the safest country globally, a position it has consistently held since 2008. Interestingly, eight out of the ten safest countries** are located in Europe, while only one Asian country appears in the top 10.

Here is the list of the 10 safest countries:

1. Iceland
2. Ireland
3. New Zealand
4. Austria
5. Switzerland
6. Singapore (the only Asian representative)
7. Portugal
8. Denmark
9. Slovenia
10. Finland

These nations are known for political stability, low crime rates, and efficient institutions, making them highly desirable for both residents and travelers.

Top 10 Most Dangerous Countries in the World

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Russia ranks last out of the 163 countries included in the Global Peace Index, making it the most dangerous nation in 2025. Ukraine, still embroiled in war, follows closely behind.

The ten least peaceful countries are as follows:

1. Russia
2. Ukraine
3. Sudan
4. Democratic Republic of the Congo
5. Yemen
6. Afghanistan
7. Syria
8. South Sudan
9. Israel
10.Mali

These countries are often affected by prolonged conflicts, political instability, and humanitarian crises, which significantly lower their safety scores.

India and Pakistan’s Global Peace Rankings

India ranks 115th on the Global Peace Index 2025. This position remains unchanged from last year, indicating a stable but unimproved peace situation within the country. Conversely, Pakistan has shown a slight improvement. Previously ranked 145th, it has now moved up one spot to 144th, despite its ongoing reputation as a hotspot for extremist activities. Turkey, a strategic ally of Pakistan, sits two places lower at 146th.
