New Delhi: Controversy over Greenland has again emerged in international politics. US President Donald Trump's latest statement has increased the tension between European countries and NATO. Describing this huge Arctic island as important from a strategic point of view, Trump made a statement regarding its direct control, which has become a matter of concern for other countries.
Trump stressed that Greenland is of national security importance to the United States. He even said that America is considering options to increase its influence on this. Trump had also talked about buying Greenland last time, but now there is more clarity in his stance.
European countries like Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, and the United Kingdom have directly rejected America's views. These countries say that Greenland's destiny should be decided by Greenland's own people and Denmark and not under the pressure of any outside power. European leaders have emphasized respecting sovereignty, i.e., universal rights.
Trump's statement is also affecting the NATO alliance because Denmark is its member. On one hand, America in its statement is describing Greenland as strategically important, while on the other hand, the Danish leadership is objecting to it. This situation within NATO is raising questions about alliance unity and the basic principles of security cooperation.
Some European leaders and experts are talking about a NATO-led mission to strengthen security in the Arctic. A proposal like “Arctic Sentry” has come in, in which joint monitoring and security deployment in the Arctic region with European countries is being considered. This is considered to be an effort to maintain security balance for other member countries, including America.
Greenland is not only important geographically but has also become the center of new possibilities in the Arctic due to natural resources, sea routes, and changing climate. Due to global warming, sea routes are opening up, due to which the interest of global players like Russia and China in Greenland and the Arctic has also increased.
From the perspective of international diplomacy, the Greenland dispute does not seem to be resolved soon. The reaction of European countries and divisions within NATO are increasing. Experts believe that Trump's statement has started a new debate on Arctic policy and security cooperation, and in the future it will also impact global politics and security strategies.
