Washington: An agreement regarding a ceasefire has been reached between Israel and Lebanon. A ceasefire has been established between the two nations for the next 10 days. US President Donald Trump announced this on Thursday.

What did Donald Trump say?

Trump stated that this ceasefire is scheduled to go into effect at 5:00 PM Eastern Time. He also personally took credit for the achievement, noting that he has successfully halted nine wars to date, and this marks the tenth. He remarked, "Let's get this done."

Announcing this pause in hostilities on social media, President Trump stated that the development followed excellent discussions with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Following a conflict lasting over a month between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, Lebanon and Israel held their first direct diplomatic talks in decades in Washington on Tuesday. Trump added that he has instructed Vice President JD Vance and others to work in conjunction with Israel and Lebanon to achieve a lasting peace.

Writing on the social media platform Truth, Trump stated: "I just concluded a very productive conversation with the highly respected President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, and the Prime Minister of Israel, Bibi Netanyahu. Both leaders have agreed to formally initiate a 10-day ceasefire between their respective nations, commencing at 5:00 PM local time, in an effort to establish peace between their countries. On Tuesday—for the first time in 34 years—representatives from both nations met in Washington alongside our great Secretary of State, Marco Rubio."

He further added: "I have instructed Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Rubio—working in coordination with Dan Rezinken, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff—to work toward establishing a lasting peace between Israel and Lebanon. It has been an honor for me to help resolve nine conflicts across the globe, and this will mark my tenth." "So, let's go ahead and get this done."

All quiet between Israel and Hezbollah?

The U.S. President had announced that the leaders of Israel and Lebanon would hold talks regarding a ceasefire. Meanwhile, cross-border fire continued between Israel and Hezbollah, with Hezbollah targeting towns in northern Israel with rockets and drones. The Israeli offensive in southern Lebanon intensified, particularly around the cities of Tyre and Nabatieh, as well as Bint Jbeil—a strategic town situated near the Israeli border.

Israel and Lebanon have technically been in a state of war since Israel's establishment in 1948, and deep divisions persist within Lebanon regarding diplomatic relations with Israel. Israeli troops have pushed deeper into southern Lebanon to establish a security zone. Netanyahu has stated that this zone will extend at least 8 to 10 kilometers (5 to 6 miles) into Lebanese territory.
