India US Trade Talks: Ahead of the crucial trade talks between India and the US, White House senior trade adviser Peter Navarro has once again made a scathing remark. He claimed that India is now returning to the negotiating table. This statement comes at a time when US President Donald Trump had imposed a massive tariff of up to 50 percent on India a few weeks ago. The impact of this move was also seen on India's exports, which fell to a nine-month low.
Navarro, who often makes headlines for his anti-India remarks, said in a recent interview that India will take the path of agreement at some point or other; otherwise, the situation will not be good for it. He termed India as the 'Maharaja of tariffs' and said that the Delhi government is angry with his statements.
Navarro also questioned India's oil purchase from Russia. According to him, this deal is like earning 'blood money.' He alleged that India had hardly bought oil from Russia before the Ukraine war, but now suddenly large-scale purchases have started. “Russian refiners are profiting on Indian soil, and American taxpayers are bearing the brunt of the war,” Navarro said.
This is not the first time Navarro has sent a message to India in a harsh tone. He had earlier said that the US has made successful trade agreements with countries like the European Union, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and Indonesia because they understand the importance of US markets. Navarro says that if India does not cooperate, it will have to stand with Russia and China, and this will not be in its interest at all.
The upcoming meeting in New Delhi is taking place at a time when the relations between the two countries have become tense due to the tariff dispute. The US delegation has already reached Delhi. Experts believe that this meeting may not be decisive in the direction of a formal trade agreement, but it will definitely prove to be an attempt to fill the rift in the relations.
