International News:A meeting was held in a closed room in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) recently over the increasing tension between India and Pakistan. The meeting was not held in the main room of the Security Council, but in the 'Consultation Room', which is specifically determined to discuss on sensitive and confidential issues. Pakistan organized this meeting, who is temporary member of UNSC right now. Its purpose was to discuss the growing tension and its consequences between India and Pakistan before the global community.
United Nations Secretary -General Antonio Guterres clearly warned in this meeting that the increasing tension between India and Pakistan had reached a very dangerous level. He strongly criticized the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir recently. Guterres said, "This is the time to move towards peace instead of struggle. The military is making the dispute more complicated rather than solving it.
Guterres requested both Pakistan and India to restart the conversation process and try to escape the military route. He believed that the situation could be worse until the two sides take steps towards peace.
After the meeting, Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, a permanent representative in the United Nations of Pakistan, while talking to the media, said that the meeting gave Pakistan an important opportunity to put its view on the international stage. He alleged that India's unilateral steps and inflammatory statements have further increased regional instability. Iftikhar specifically described India's decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty as a serious threat to Pakistan and said that the move could further deepen the issue of water between the two countries.
Former permanent representative of India, Syed Akbaruddin, sharply opposed Pakistan's allegations, saying that the meeting would not move towards any concrete solution. He described Pakistan's effort as a means of making headlines only in international media. Akbaruddin also said that India is fully aware of its security and will give a proper answer to any kind of incorrect information or inflammatory rhetoric.
The Pakistani representative expressed to control the India's efforts using Indus River as a "blessed weapon" He saiad, "it a threat to the existence of Pakistan. Water is life. If the flow of water is interrupted, it can create a severe crisis for Pakistan."
The increasing tension between India and Pakistan has worried not only the two countries, but also the entire international community.
