Indonesia: A tragic road accident occurred early Monday morning on Indonesia's Java Island, plunging many families into deep grief. Shortly after midnight, a passenger bus lost control and overturned. At least 15 people lost their lives in this accident, while many other passengers were seriously injured.

Where was the bus going, and how did the accident happen?

According to local officials, the bus was going from the capital, Jakarta, to Yogyakarta. There were a total of 34 passengers in the bus. The driver lost control of the bus as soon as it reached the toll road. The speeding bus first hit the concrete barrier and then overturned on the road. The passengers did not even get a chance to recover from this sudden accident.

What were the conditions at the scene?

There was a hue and cry on the spot after the accident. People passing nearby immediately informed the police and relief agencies. The rescue team pulled out the passengers from the damaged bus. Many people were in critical condition and were immediately sent by ambulance to hospitals in Semarang.

What difficulties were faced in relief and rescue operations?

Budyono, head of the search and rescue agency, said some passengers were trapped inside when the bus overturned. Due to darkness, the relief work took time, but the teams made continuous efforts to rescue all the injured. The process of identification of the dead has also been started.

Why do such accidents happen again and again in Indonesia?

Road accidents have become common in Indonesia. Many vehicles are old and are not regularly inspected. Apart from this, high speed and ignorance of traffic rules also become the cause of major accidents. Last year, 12 people lost their lives in a road accident during Eid. In 2019, a bus fell into a ditch on the island of Sumatra, killing more than 35 people. Such accidents have been raising questions on the road safety system from time to time.

What concerns have the continuous incidents raised?

This incident comes after the recent fire incident in a building in Jakarta, in which 22 people died. With such incidents happening again and again, the question is being raised whether the security arrangements and emergency services are really adequate.
