Tehran: Iran has once again closed the Strait of Hormuz. It took this decision while accusing the United States of breaking its promises. Statements regarding this matter, citing military sources, have been released in the Iranian media. According to Iran, the United States has maintained a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz to this day. Consequently, Iran was compelled to take this step.

Iran's state media confirmed that the Strait of Hormuz has been closed again. "The U.S. did not fulfill its obligations. Therefore, the Strait of Hormuz is now closed again, and passage requires Iran’s approval," the Iranian government said in a statement.

Iran had previously warned that if the U.S. continued its blockade of Iranian vessels and ports, it would close the strait once again. Iranian officials stated that this blockade constitutes a violation of the ceasefire agreement reached between Iran and the U.S. last week.

Are There Apprehensions of a Deepening Energy Crisis?

With the renewed closure of the Strait of Hormuz, fears that the energy crisis will deepen further have begun to mount. This situation is disrupting global energy supplies. Prior to this, following reports of an agreement between the U.S. and Iran, oil prices had begun to decline again on Friday. It is worth noting that one-fifth of the world's total oil supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Given this context, the renewed closure of the strait is bound to impact oil supplies. If this situation persists, oil prices are expected to rise once again.

What Are Trump's Intentions?

Trump had imposed the blockade on Iran as part of an effort aimed at pressuring Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and to accept the ceasefire brokered through Pakistan's mediation. This ceasefire was proposed to bring an end to the conflict that had been ongoing for approximately seven weeks between Israel, the United States, and Iran.

Despite Iran's announcement that it would reopen the strait, Trump's decision to maintain the blockade is being viewed as a strategy to sustain pressure on Tehran, as the future of the two-week ceasefire—announced just last week—remains uncertain. Trump has indicated that a second round of negotiations could take place this weekend.

What Lies Ahead for the Ceasefire?

A ceasefire in Lebanon could remove a major obstacle standing in the way of a potential agreement to end the conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel. However, it remains unclear to what extent Hezbollah will adhere to an agreement in the negotiations for which it played no role, and under which Israeli troops will maintain a presence in a section of southern Lebanon. In another post, Trump stated that the United States has prevented Israel from launching further attacks on Lebanon. The Israel-Hezbollah conflict has gone on long enough.
