Tehran: Tension in the Middle East is still not subsiding. Iran has again clarified its position regarding the Strait of Hormuz, but the situation remains quite complicated.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that the Strait of Hormuz is not completely closed. He clarified that this route is closed only for ships of those countries that Iran considers its enemy. Ships from rest of the countries can pass after proper procedure and coordination. Araghchi also said that the reason ships are stopping is because of insurance companies who fear war, not because of Iran.
Iran says that tankers and ships of America, Israel and their partner countries are not being allowed to pass through this route. They believe that giving way to such ships is not in their interest.
Iran has claimed that ships from countries like India, China, Russia, Iraq and Pakistan are being allowed to pass safely. Some Indian LPG tankers have already crossed. These ships are being given passage after special coordination so that the supply chain is not affected much.
The Strait of Hormuz is the world's most important oil route, through which about 20% of the global oil supply passes. Due to the tension here, oil prices have increased, shipping traffic has reduced significantly and pressure on shipping companies has increased. Many ships are stopped and waiting.
Right now Iran is completely away from talks. Araghchi said that their current policy is based only on “resistance” and they are not ready for any kind of dialogue. According to him, any discussion of talks at this time would be like showing weakness.
Iran says that no formal talks have taken place between the two yet. At the same time, America claims that efforts for negotiation are ongoing and the situation is constantly changing. Statements from both sides are different from each other.
This statement came when America had given a strict warning to Iran that if the Strait of Hormuz is not opened, there could be serious consequences. Despite this, Iran did not change its stance and said that it would not be afraid of threats.
From the current situation it seems that the tension is not going to reduce soon. On the one hand, strictness and pressure on sea routes are increasing, while on the other hand, the possibilities of dialogue are weakening. The situation may become more critical in the coming days.
