Tehran: Iran fired ballistic missiles at southern Israel, mainly targeting the cities of Dimona and Arad. Dimona came into limelight because it is home to Israel's largest nuclear research center. Iran described it as its main target, and the attack took place after Iran's Natanz nuclear site had already been attacked.
According to Magen David Adom (Israel's ambulance service) and other sources, a total of more than 100 people were injured in Dimona and Arad. In Arad, the missile fell directly into a residential area, where more than 10 apartment buildings were badly damaged, some catching fire and debris falling. Around 70-80 people were rushed to the hospital, of whom 10-11 were in critical condition—including a 5-year-old little girl and a 12-year-old boy who were injured by shrapnel. In Dimona too, 20-50 are said to be injured, a 10-year-old boy is in moderate condition. Rescue teams are still searching for people trapped under the debris, a state of emergency has been declared in Arad, and hospitals are under pressure. No deaths have been confirmed yet, but the situation remains very critical.
The Israeli Army itself has admitted that Iron Dome, Arrow and other systems could not completely intercept these missiles. Direct hits occurred in Dimona and Arad, which are very close to the nuclear site. This is the first time that such a direct attack took place so close to a nuclear facility. People are now asking questions as to how this happened despite such high-tech defense. The military is investigating, and it is clear that some missiles escaped the system.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immediately spoke by phone to the mayor of Arad, asked about the situation and expressed condolences for the injured. The entire government and army are on high alert. IDF Chief has authorized retaliatory attacks on all fronts. Netanyahu has called it "the biggest challenge to the country's security", and now Israel appears to be preparing for large-scale retaliation.
Drone attacks took place around Baghdad in Iraq, American bases and intelligence targets are being attacked. The US Embassy has advised its citizens living in Iraq to remain alert and leave quickly. Iran-backed groups have become active on American and other targets, putting the entire region at high risk.
The situation is very critical right now. Attacks and counter-attacks are intensifying from both sides. The biggest fear is the targeting of nuclear sites. There is concern around the world that this might turn into a regional war or a major conflict. Whatever decision is made in the coming hours and days, it will affect the entire Middle East and beyond. Everything is uncertain right now, but the tension is very high.
