Iran: Iran is currently in the second week of the war. After the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his son Mojtaba Khamenei (or Seyed Mojtaba Khamenei) has been made the new Supreme Leader. Iran's state broadcaster IRIB has given this news. Then immediately Iran fired the "first wave" of missiles at Israel—state media said it was "under the leadership of Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei." Air raid sirens sounded in northern and central areas of Israel, including Tel Aviv and Haifa. Israel's Home Front Command said the missiles were intercepted, fragments of the interceptors fell in some places, but now it is safe - people can come out of the shelters.

What happened this morning?

  • Around 6:49 AM IST: IRIB posted on Telegram – "Iran fires first wave of missiles at areas occupied by Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei."
  • Just before this, at 6:30 AM IST: Sirens struck in Israel, police received reports of debris falling at two places in the central areas.

All this happened when the assembly comprising Iran's top clerics elected Mojtaba. His father Ali Khamenei was killed in the first major US-Israeli strike on February 28 – his compound was destroyed. Mojtaba is now 56, has long-standing connections to the IRGC, and has also become commander-in-chief.

What will happen next?

Trump had already said that it would be "unacceptable" if his son became the leader. Israel is also saying that any new leader who comes will also become a target. But Iran made it clear old policies will continue, and retaliatory attacks will intensify.

Oil storage sites were targeted in Israel's latest attacks on Tehran. Tension is at its peak throughout West Asia, oil prices crossed $100. It remains to be seen what happens now – will the war intensify or will a solution be found.
