New Delhi: The long-standing dispute between the US and Iran has reached a highly sensitive juncture. US President Donald Trump has made it clear that he is fully willing to move forward with talks with Iran. At the same time, he asserted that the ceasefire between the two nations is now over. He also clarified America's stance on the issue via a social media post.
Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, that the Islamic Republic of Iran had requested to continue talks with the US. He stated that the US had agreed to this, while also making it clear to Iran that the ceasefire between the two countries has ended. However, he did not share many specific details regarding the modalities of these talks or the terms of the ceasefire.
The latest dispute began when the US launched a series of rapid strikes on Iranian targets. This action was taken in response to attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The US directly held Tehran responsible for the attacks on these ships. Iran, on the other hand, categorically rejected all these allegations, dismissing them as dubious.
According to vessel tracking data, the targeted ships were passing near the coast of Oman. Iran has long maintained that only ships following its designated routes through the Strait of Hormuz would remain safe. Consequently, the situation in the region became extremely critical following the US action.
Following this standoff, Iran retaliated by targeting several US military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain. Bahrain hosts the US Navy's Fifth Fleet, making the area highly sensitive. Amidst this, the IRGC claimed to have shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone; however, this claim could not be independently verified. Limited retaliatory strikes between the two nations have continued in the Middle East in recent weeks. Against this backdrop, Trump's statement that the ceasefire is over is being seen as an indication that the earlier diplomatic understanding has weakened. This development comes just days after indirect talks regarding Iran's nuclear program took place between US and Iranian officials in Qatar.
