World News: Tensions in West Asia have reached a boiling point. On Monday morning, Iran stunned the international community by launching a missile strike on Al-Udeid Airbase in Qatar, the largest U.S. military facility in the Middle East. The strike came as a direct retaliation to recent US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, triggering fresh instability across the region.

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, several Gulf nations—including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Iraq—announced the closure of their airspace until further notice. This move has disrupted international air travel, particularly flights operating between India and the Gulf countries.

Why Did Iran Launch the Attack?

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council issued a statement from Tehran, stating that the missile strike was a response to the United States’ aggressive and provocative actions. The Iranian government clarified that the attack was not aimed at Qatar but solely targeted the American military base on Qatari soil.

“We launched as many missiles as the US dropped bombs on our nuclear sites,” the statement said. “This action was a legitimate exercise of our right to self-defense and an effort to preserve regional balance.” Iran further emphasized that the strike did not violate Qatar’s sovereignty and should not be seen as an act against regional unity.

Impact on Indian Flights

Following the missile attack, air traffic between India and Qatar has been severely affected. On Monday, two major flights were cancelled—an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Doha and an Air India flight from Cochin. Meanwhile, Air India Express diverted its Cochin–Doha flight to Muscat and returned a flight that had departed from Kannur.

A spokesperson for Air India Express stated, “We currently have no operational flights to Doha. We are closely monitoring the situation and prioritizing the safety of all our passengers.” IndiGo also issued a travel advisory, urging travelers to stay updated on flight statuses and potential schedule changes.

Qatar’s Strong Condemnation

Reacting sharply, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the missile attack in strong terms, calling it a “shameless and reckless act.” The ministry asserted that Qatar reserves the right to respond appropriately under international law.

“In the interest of public safety—including that of our citizens, residents, and tourists—we have decided to temporarily suspend all air traffic,” the ministry said in an official statement.

Meanwhile, the US Department of Defense and the White House have confirmed that they are monitoring the situation closely. Security protocols at the Al-Udeid Airbase have been heightened to counter any further threats.

The missile strike on Al-Udeid Airbase marks a dangerous escalation in an already volatile region. While initially a confrontation between the US and Iran, the ripple effects are now being felt across borders, putting the entire region at risk. With multiple countries involved and international aviation affected, the world now watches with concern as West Asia stands on the brink of a deeper geopolitical crisis. The days ahead are expected to be crucial.
