Los Angeles: There was panic in the Westwood area of Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon when a U-Haul truck moved towards a crowd of people present on the street. There was a protest going on against the government of Iran. At least two people were injured when the truck collided.
The demonstration was held outside the Wilshire Federal Building. The rally was to start at around 2 pm, and even before that, thousands of people had gathered there. People were raising slogans and standing with placards in support of the ongoing protests in Iran.
The truck that met with the accident had a political slogan painted on its side. It was written in it that neither a Shah nor the present regime is needed, and an appeal was made to America not to repeat the mistake of 1953.
This is related to the old history of Iran, when Shah was brought back to power there after a coup. Many protesters believe that decision destabilized the country in the long run.
After the accident, the police took out the driver of the truck and caught him on the spot. When the police were taking him away, some angry people pounced on him. Someone tried to hit him with the flagpole, and someone pushed him, but the police intervened and took him out safely.
The front glass of the truck was completely shattered. There was glass spread on the road. The trailer behind appeared empty and its door was open. Police surrounded the entire area and people were moved away.
At present the police have not clearly said whether the driver did this intentionally or he was scared and lost control of the vehicle. Investigation is going on, and footage from nearby cameras is being viewed.
People of the Iranian community living in America say that hundreds of people have lost their lives during anti-government protests in Iran. In protest against this, rallies are being held in many cities of the world, and this rally in Los Angeles was also a part of it.
