Philippines: A 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Friday. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the tremor was recorded at a depth of 29 kilometers (approximately 18.02 miles). Authorities are still monitoring the situation as it develops, and details regarding potential casualties or infrastructural damage are currently being assessed.
Mindanao got hit hard just weeks ago. A powerful 7.8 magnitude quake struck in early June in which more than 80 people had died. Damage occurred and spread across several areas. This latest quake shows the region is unstable. The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is a seismically active zone as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions happen often here.
The June quake was devastating that killed at least 20 people along with more than 200 got injured. The tremor triggered tsunami warnings. Coastal areas evacuated fast. Power had also went out and phone services stopped. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said that the quake was shallow, and it was just 10 kilometers deep. That made the ground shake harder and raised tsunami fears. The center first said 8.2 magnitude, then it confirmed 7.8. Rescue teams worked for days. They searched for survivors and assessed the damage. It took time to count the dead.
The two earthquakes that hit Venezuela are getting deadlier. Acting President Delcy Rodriguez said on Friday that the death toll is now 589. Another 2,980 people are injured. Rodriguez was with government and military officials. She was also welcoming international rescue teams. She said that the work and developments are continues. "We are going to rescue the people who are trapped," she said. "We are working tirelessly on this task." Search teams are still digging. International teams are also helping. The worst-hit areas get the most effort. But rescue operations are slow. People are still under the rubble and to finding them takes the time.
