Te Aviv: The Strait of Hormuz is the world's most critical maritime route. Approximately 20 percent of the world's oil passes through this waterway. Controlling this route has a profound impact on global oil supplies. U.S. President Donald Trump has now decided to focus his full efforts on the Strait of Hormuz.
Over the past 24 hours, he has taken four major steps that signal a readiness to exert severe economic and military pressure on Iran. These decisions come at a time when discussions regarding a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran are underway, yet tensions remain extremely high. Trump has stated that this pressure will persist until a comprehensive agreement is reached with Iran.
Donald Trump has issued clear orders to the U.S. Navy to rapidly clear the mines (explosive devices) planted in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran had previously laid mines in this area, thereby hindering the movement of ships. Now, U.S. minesweepers (mine-clearing vessels) are operating at a speed three times faster than before. Trump has insisted that this operation must proceed without interruption and with even greater urgency.
This signifies that the U.S. aims to secure and reopen the Strait of Hormuz as quickly as possible—but strictly on its own terms. While the clearing of mines could allow global oil transport to resume, Iran will not be permitted to reap any benefits from this development. This move represents an attempt to thwart Iran's strategy, through which it had sought to blockade the entire region by deploying mines.
Trump's second major decision is exceptionally stern. He has ordered the U.S. military that if any Iranian vessel attempts to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz, it is to be destroyed by gunfire without any hesitation. He issued a clear directive: "Shoot and kill."
Regardless of whether the vessels are small boats, absolutely no hesitation is to be shown. Trump asserted that Iranian boats will no longer be able to lay mines as they have in the past. This order comes at a time when Iran's Revolutionary Guards have previously attacked several vessels and seized two ships. This decision by the U.S. serves as a direct message to Iran that no further hostile actions will be tolerated.
The third decision involves further strengthening the U.S. naval blockade. The U.S. has already imposed a blockade on Iranian ports and the areas surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Any vessel transporting oil or goods to or from Iranian ports is being intercepted.
Trump has now ordered that this blockade be "tripled"—that is, strengthened threefold. This implies that a greater number of U.S. warships will be deployed to the region. Iran's oil exports have effectively ground to a halt. Trump has stated that this blockade will remain in force until a comprehensive agreement is reached with Iran. As a result, Iran is incurring financial losses amounting to tens of millions of dollars daily.
The fourth—and most serious—step involves preparations to completely halt Iran's oil production. In addition to the blockade, the U.S. is now planning to intensify pressure on Iran's oil production facilities. Trump's objective is to ensure that Iran is left with absolutely no avenue to generate revenue through oil sales.
Iran ranks among the world's major oil producers. If its oil production and exports were to cease, the Iranian economy would suffer a devastating blow. The U.S. maintains that economic pressure is the only means of compelling Iran to return to the negotiating table. Such measures could trigger a global surge in oil prices, the repercussions of which would inevitably be felt by the general public.
Collectively, these four decisions reveal a comprehensive strategy to encircle Iran from all sides. Trump has entered an "all-in" mode—signaling that he is no longer prepared to back down. This strategy entails, on one front, efforts to clear mines and open shipping lanes; on a second, a crackdown on Iranian vessels; on a third, a reinforced naval blockade; and on a fourth, a direct assault on Iran's oil production capabilities.
Iran, for its part, asserts that the US blockade constitutes a violation of the ceasefire agreement. Meanwhile, Trump asserts that Iran must first adhere to the terms of the agreement. Talks are underway between both sides, yet tensions show no signs of subsiding. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is impacting not only Iran but the global economy as a whole. Oil prices are on the rise.
