Washington: US President Donald Trump has made a significant claim regarding the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that the US should take control of the Strait and receive payment from other countries in exchange for ensuring its security.

In a telephone interview with Fox News, Trump said that the US would secure this waterway and might even take over its operations. He remarked that the US would become the region's guardian—or even its "guardian angel."

What did Donald Trump say?

Trump noted that many wealthy nations rely on this waterway. Since these nations are US allies, the entire burden of security cannot be placed solely on the United States. According to him, the US should receive adequate compensation for this responsibility. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical maritime trade routes, facilitating the transport of vast quantities of global crude oil and gas. Recent tensions in the region have also impacted global energy markets.

What about Surge in Crude Oil Prices?

Crude oil prices in the international market have surged following Iran's effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns about rising inflation worldwide. On Saturday, Iran announced the closure of the waterway, citing unauthorized maritime traffic. Subsequently, on Sunday, Tehran stated that the route would remain closed for the time being, with permission for vessels to pass granted only after the situation normalizes and peace is restored.
What are Donald Trump's Accusations Against Iran?
During the interview, Trump also accused Iran of violating previous agreements. He stated that a deal had been reached between the two sides, but Iran had reneged on it. Trump claimed that Iran has a history of breaching agreements. He asserted that the US would now adopt a tough stance against Iran.

Meanwhile, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a statement on Monday declaring that normal maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz could only resume if the US ended its military intervention in the region. The IRGC warned that if US interference continues, even greater crises could arise in the global oil and gas sector.
