New Delhi: A big development has taken place regarding power in Myanmar. Min Aung Hlaing, former army chief, has now become the president of the country. This decision came to light after voting in Parliament. He was at the center of power since the coup and has now formally reached the top post.
Voting for the president was held in the parliament. The outcome was already considered almost certain due to the majority of the army-backed groups. Accordingly, Hlaing got support.
Questions are being raised regarding this process. The opposition was already in a weak position. Many parties either stayed out or were not seen in an active role.
In the year 2021, the army took power by removing the elected government. Since then, military control has remained in the country. The current change is being considered as a continuation of the same sequence.
On the surface, change is visible, but experts believe that the real control will still remain with the army. There is little hope that a major change will be seen in the system due to change of post.
The situation in Myanmar has not been normal for the last few years. Conflict continues in many areas. There is pressure on both security and administration.
Outside countries are keeping an eye on this step. There has been criticism about military rule in the past as well, so there may be a reaction in the future also.
An eye is being kept on which direction the country's politics will take after this decision. In the current situation, the center of power remains the same, only the nature of the post has changed. The role of the opposition has already been limited, hence there is little hope for major changes in the future.
At present, the focus is on how the government works after the new system and whether there is any change in the situation within the country or not.
