Nepal Flood: Sudden Deluge Causes Massive Destruction, Villages & Hydropower Projects Washed Away

New Delhi/Kathmandu: A sudden flood from Tibet caused huge devastation in Nepal's Rasuwa district on Wednesday morning. The water level of Bhote Koshi river suddenly increased at around 9 am, after which the strong flow moved towards Trishuli River. Initial reports of widespread damage have emerged in Timure Bazaar, Timure Customs Office and Syabrubesi area of northern Rasuwa. Administration teams are assessing the damage and possible casualties.

How did the river water rise so suddenly?

The flow of water suddenly increased in the Bhote Koshi river at around 9 am on Wednesday morning. After this the floodwater reached the Trishuli River and started moving rapidly towards the low-lying areas. The effect of flood was visible from Timure and Syabrubesi of Rasuwa to Betravati, Trishuli, Dhunge and Devighat of Nuwakot. Officials have advised people living on the river banks to immediately move to safe places.

How much damage was caused in Timure and Syabrubbesi?

The maximum impact of flood is being reported in the northern parts of Rasuwa. The situation in Timure became very bad due to floods and debris. A helicopter sent for rescue also had to return to Kathmandu as it could not find a safe landing spot. According to local reports, the helipad of Timure was also washed away by the strong flood currents.

In view of the flood situation, officials have appealed to the people to avoid travelling on Prithvi Highway and riverbank roads. In view of the possible danger, the local administration has advised stopping the movement of vehicles for some time. District coordination committees are activating rescue teams and emergency resources.
