Nigeria: A major kidnapping took place in the western region of Nigeria on Friday. Gunmen attacked St. Mary's Catholic boarding school in the Papiri community and took away more than 200 children. This is one of the biggest kidnapping incidents in the country in recent years. According to local officials, the attackers took away 215 students and 12 teachers.
The Christian Association of Nigeria said it was working with authorities for the safe return of the children. Senior officials of the organization reached the school at night and met the parents. Many families are still troubled by not getting any information about their children.
According to the state police, the attack took place early in the morning. After the incident, army and security forces were sent to the area. Local people say that there were only private security guards in the school; government security forces were not present. A guard was shot in the attack.
62-year-old Dauda Chekula said that his four grandchildren were also among the kidnapped children. He says that the children who were able to escape ran in different directions, and till now they do not know exactly where the attackers have taken the other children.
The state government admitted that they had received input about the threat in advance. But the school had resumed classes without government permission, putting the children at risk. After the incident, many federal schools have also been closed as a precautionary measure.
This kidnapping comes after 25 girl students were kidnapped in Kebbi State a few days ago. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but locals say gangs often target schools for ransom. More than 1,500 students have been kidnapped in Nigeria in the last decade.
Gunmen also attacked a church in Kwara State, killing two and abducting 38 people. The kidnappers have demanded a huge ransom.
In view of the increasing attacks, President Tinubu canceled his South Africa G20 trip this week. The government says that work is underway on every option to bring the children back safely.
Many local people and social organizations are demanding the government increase security in schools and villages. He says that the continuous kidnappings have become a big threat to the future of children and the security of the entire country.
