Islamabad: US envoys departed for the Pakistani capital on Saturday to initiate a new round of peace talks with Iran. As Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner set off for Islamabad, the White House stated that they would hold face-to-face discussions with Iranian representatives. The Iranian delegation—comprising Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghaddam, and Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ismail Bakai—had arrived late Friday night.
Accompanied by his team, Abbas Araghchi met today with Pakistan's Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, who has played a pivotal role in the mediation efforts. The two were seen together in a brief video released by the Tehran embassy. However, details regarding the discussions were not disclosed. It is believed that Iran has conveyed its terms to Asim Munir. This marked the first working meeting following the arrival of the Iranian Foreign Minister. He is also expected to meet with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar. Representing Pakistan, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and other officials were also present.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that Witkoff and Kushner would travel to Pakistan "to engage in discussions with representatives of the Iranian delegation." Jean-Pierre added, "The Iranians reached out in response to the President's call and requested face-to-face talks." She further noted that these discussions are expected to "make progress toward a resolution."
