Kyiv: Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed holding a trilateral summit with US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to end the Ukraine war. According to a The Wall Street Journal report, Putin made this suggestion during a phone conversation with Trump on October 9. The solution to the Ukraine conflict may be discussed in a possible meeting. However, the final agreement regarding the meeting has not yet been reached between the three countries.
According to the report, Russia has suggested a meeting of the three leaders during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit to be held in Shenzhen, China in November. The conference is scheduled to be held on November 18 and 19.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has confirmed talks regarding a possible meeting. However, he clarified that no concrete consensus has been reached yet regarding the meeting and its agenda. Therefore, at present it is not decided whether the three leaders will sit together and discuss the Ukraine war or not.
US President Donald Trump has not yet given formal consent to attend this trilateral summit. According to the report, a senior US administration official said that Trump may consider this proposal as he is trying to reach an agreement to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
Trump recently said that peace talks between Russia and Ukraine are making progress. He also said that he does not want to take any step that would lead Russia to withdraw from the negotiating table. However, despite claims of progress in talks, no final agreement to end the war has been announced.
According to the report, Russian diplomats have proposed a trilateral meeting to Chinese officials. There is news of indication from China that if Trump is ready to attend the meeting, then Beijing will not object to this format.
However, concerns of Ukraine and its European allies may increase regarding this proposal. The main reason for this is that the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the proposed talks is not clear, while the war is directly affecting Ukraine. Discussing any potential agreement without Ukraine's participation could raise questions about the terms and outcomes of the talks.
The issue of energy cooperation has also come up in the talks between Putin and Trump. According to Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian president, the two leaders discussed economic initiatives, energy supplies and international issues.
The Wall Street Journal report also mentions a proposal related to the supply of Russian diesel to the US and international markets along with talks on the Ukraine war. This conversation regarding energy cooperation has emerged as an important aspect of the relations between the two countries. However, a final decision on the date and agenda of any potential trilateral summit is yet to be taken.
At present it is too early to answer this question. Russia wants to pursue talks for a peace agreement, while America is also talking about efforts to end the war. The possible role of China can give a new platform to this diplomatic process.
But confirmation of the meeting, Ukraine's participation and the terms of a possible agreement remain unclear. In such a situation, the international community will keep an eye on the diplomatic activities taking place during the proposed APEC conference in November.
